29 an hour 23 hours ago 23 hours ago 23 hours ago TRUMBULL SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT (SWCD) CONSERVATION TECHNICIAN JOB DESCRIPTION The position is located in the Trumbull SWCD office.
This position is the direct responsibility of the Board of Supervisors.
However, the position reports to the District Administrator for the day-to-day/operational supervision.
Qualifications:
Education/Experience Examples Master's degree in environmental science, conservation, agriculture or a related field highly considered; a candidate with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field of study; one (1) or more years of related experience and/or training will be considered; experience may be considered in lieu of education; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Selected candidate must undergo Ohio and federal background checks.
Final offer of employment will be contingent on the findings of background checks.
Licensure or certification requirements:
Must possess a valid Ohio driver's license and maintain insurability under the SWCD vehicle insurance policy.
This position requires:
Knowledge of the principles and practices of natural resource conservation and education.
Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
Ability to work in inclement weather and walk in farm fields including uneven terrain.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) Ability to take initiative, be goal oriented, be dependable and have a strong motivation to serve the community.
Enthusiasm for District programs.
Main
Responsibilities:
1.
Provides technical assistance to District cooperators and units of government; prepares for conservation projects and/or conservation education programs that have been identified in the District's Annual Plan of Work and Strategic Plans.
2.
Advises and assists land users on pond management, woodlands, protection of wildlife areas and the planting of adequate wildlife feed and cover as incorporated in conservation plans.
3.
Assists land users in applying vegetative practices by giving advice and on-site assistance in the proper method for reestablishing vegetation or stabilizing bare soils to avoid erosion; assist land users with implementing soil health practices.
4.
Assists in conducting conferences, tours, field days, public viewing of demonstrations (ex:
equipment, cover crop plots, best management practices, etc.
); maintains personal contact with District cooperators and explains the District conservation programs to the public, engineers, farmers, and other government agencies.
Encourages landowners and operators to become district cooperators and participate in conservation training sessions.
5.
Builds working relationships with other county agencies, and organizations to promote conservation practices in Trumbull County.
6.
Assists with Agricultural Pollution Abatement site investigations and reporting and provides assistance to farmers to stay in compliance with all provisions of pollution abatement laws and nutrient management laws and any applicable Farm Bill programs.
7.
Verifies program applications and ensures documentation is complete and accurate.
8.
Assists land users with drainage and stream erosion issues or complications.
9.
Leads and/or assists with the H2Ohio Program opportunities in Trumbull County.
10.
Conducts chemical tests on water samples to determine water quality including, but not limited to nutrient overload (phosphate & nitrate), dissolved oxygen (DO), total suspended solids (TSS), etc.
as Board or District Administrator directed.
11.
Utilizes spread sheets, data bases, word processing, 'Beehive', GIS, and any engineering programs that are required and/or make the employee workload more efficient.
12.
Maintains records as required by the SWCD and the Ohio Soil and Water Conservation Commission.
13.
Attends the majority of staff meetings.
14.
Accepts and performs duties as assigned by the Trumbull SWCD Board of Supervisors and/or the District Administrator.
